From Michael Clay Thompson’s website:

Grammar Island, Grammar Town and Grammar Voyage by Michael Clay Thompson provide a comprehensible yet sophisticated introduction to grammar for the elementary grades. They ignore the low limits traditional at this level and include content often withheld until middle school or even high school.

Grammar Island introduces, in very simple fashion, the full four-level grammar of (1) parts of speech, (2) parts of sentences, (3) phrases, and (4) clauses. Using color to reinforce the lessons, the book offers grammar in child-friendly ways, with an array of strategies to make sophisticated material alive and fun. Grammar Town and Grammar Voyage build on the concepts of Grammar Island

Each page focuses on a single concept, and the teaching approach is to read together with kids, talk about the concepts, ask questions, refer back, and respond to questions before venturing further.

I like that these books are written for taglets. We started with the basic homeschool package which had the best combo of teacher manuals and student books. We’ve used MCT for 4 years now and are in level 4. It’s helped my very literal thinker learn to love language and actually enjoy literature. The forums have also been helpful.

My son at 5 really enjoyed me reading the Grammar Island. Just by me reading it to him he pick up more than I thought he would. It was a fun program!

Shame on me… my dd (11) had done no grammar except a few MadLibs! So, this year I did some searching and found MCT. I decided to go with Grammar Town because she was 11 but she hated it and nothing was sticking. I decided to involve my ds (9) because he was intrigued and hey, he needed some Grammar too! So, I ordered the Grammar Island package and they do it together.

WE LOVE IT…. and are so sad for the story to end. We went through Grammar Island relatively quickly and then into Sentence Island. We are nearing the end of Practice Island now and will switch to Grammar Town. I don’t expect it to take long since it reviews the concepts in Grammar Island but it adds clauses and phrases to the analysis – getting tricky now!!! Both kids enjoy labeling the parts of speech and parts of sentence and clauses.

I have very little grammar education and it has been a great learning experience for me. These books are friendly and fun. I highly recommend them. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, MCT does not do diagramming. Instead, they do a 4 level analysis – parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, etc), parts of the sentence (subject, predicate, etc), phrases, and clauses.
